Die Gedau Gothic sucht ihre architektonisch-formalen Vorbilder in den »old school« Formen der Amerikanischen Grotesk, wie sie ursprünglich zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts von
M. Fuller-Benton (Franklin- und News Gothic) und später von Jackson Burke (Trade Gothic) und von Matthew Carter (Bell Centennial/Gothic) entworfen wurden.
Alle diese Schriften besitzen eine proportional höhere x-Höhe, sind etwas schmaler geschnitten mit vergleichsweise wenig Glyphenbreitenkontrast und weisen ein offenes (Antiqua-orientiertes) »a« und ein zweistöckiges »g« auf. Dieses Design ist bedingt durch die Melange einer platzsparenden, ökonomischen Laufweite, verbunden mit einer bestmöglichen Lesbarkeit, soweit es diese schmaleren Glyphenformen zulassen (in kleineren Textmengen, konsultierendes Lesen etc.).
Im Entwurf der Gedau Gothic haben wir unsere Vorstellungen einer Amerikanischen Grotesk mit zeitgenössischem Einschlag umgesetzt. Hierbei sind unter anderem auch Details der statischen Grotesk (z.B. »komplett schließende« Punzenformen in den Glyphen a, c, e, s … mit horizontalem Strich-Ende), und ein zurückhaltender, wenn auch merklicher Square-Sans-Einschlag hinzugekommen.
Der Name Gedau ist ein Bekenntnis zum Gedautal, in dem wir die letzten zwei Jahre gelebt haben. Auch wenn das Tal selbst und seine Umgebung nicht direkten Einfluss auf die Entwurfsarbeit an der Gedau genommen haben, so bietet das Leben in dieser naturnahen Umgebung ein ausgleichendes Spannungsfeld zwischen Arbeit und Erholung.
Die
Gedau Gothic kommt mit insgesamt 12 Schnitten, welche — wie bei der
Ergilo — zwei Gewichtungen für Texte beinhalten: Roman (etwas schwerer) und Book (etwas leichter). Hierdurch ist es möglich, den Grauwert eines zu setzenden Textes neben anderen typografischen Parametern AUCH über die Wahl des Schriftschnittes zu beeinflussen (Book wirkt heller, Roman wirkt dunkler).
Die kompletten Schnitte sind: Light, Book, Roman, Medium, Bold, Black und ihre schrägen Gegenstücke, die Oblique-Schnitte.
Zu beziehen ist die Gedau als Einzelschnitt, als kleines Schriftpackage (mit vier Schnitten: Roman, Bold, Roman Oblique, Bold Oblique) und als Complete-Package mit allen 12 Schnitten. Die Gedau Gothic Schriftfamilie ist in den Fontfarm Font-Collections Legible und The whole Story enthalten.

Remember the early american oldschool M. Fuller-Benton-Stylish gothic fonts (like
Franklin Gothic, News Gothic) or the later established
Trade Gothic (J. Burke) and even
Matthew Carter´s Bell Centennial/Gothic?
They all come up with a proportional enlarged x-height, slightly narrow appearance, an antiqua-stylish-open letter »a« and a two-story »g«. It is obvious, that the formal architecture of all these fonts is the result of combining a reasonable legibility with an economic, space-saving setting.
In the design-process of Gedau Gothic we’ve thought about our own contemporary interpretation of those characteristics, combining them with more closed counters (in the glyphs a, c, e, s …), and spice it up with a mild newschool square sans touch.
The naming of
Gedau Gothic is an acknowledgement to the valley of Gedau (german: Gedautal), the place we have been living for the last two years. I do not see it in a direct way as a source of inspiration on our fontdesign but working and living here — in direct contact to a »natural« environment — means living in a total balance between work an recreation. We love
it !!!
Gedau Gothic comes up with 12 Styles including two regular (Text-)Styles: Book (lighter appearance) and Roman (darker appearance). Because of this you can define the »darkness« or the »lightness« of your text/typesettings more exactly. The complete set of styles are: Light, Book, Roman, Medium, Bold, Black and its oblique counterparts.
